Opening Day Video From PCMR
I love Opening Day. Saturday, November 20th was the first day of the ski season here for us Park City folks. I made a few runs with some staffers from the mountain who were happy to get the season rockin’.
It felt good to be back on the snow, and I was amazed how good the conditions were for the first day of the season. The weather was a mixed bag; a little bit of snow, a lot of wind. As the day went on, the cold front moved in, and by evening, we had a full-on blizzard on our hands. Forget about a white Christmas, we’re going to have a white-out Thanksgiving. Looking forward to some powder turns on Thanksgiving day. Be thankful for what we got.
Get Your Mountain On
Attention, all ski bum wannabes. The Canyons is rolling out a worldwide search to find a pro blogger for the 2010-2011 season. Here’s what you get, if you are selected:
- A SEASON PASS TO THE CANYONS
- SUPERIOR (SUITE) LODGING AT THE WALDORF ASTORIA
- SALARY OF $40,000 FOR JUST FOUR MONTH`S OF `HARD-WORK`
- USE OF CAMERA, VIDEO CAMERA AND LAPTOP
- HEAD-TO-TOE SKI OR BOARD GEAR
- CANYONS CLUB ACCESS
- AIRFARE TO AND FROM CANYONS
- SPA TREATMENTS
- SKI SCHOOL AND AVALANCHE TRAINING CLINICS
- FIRST TRACKS AND HELI SKIING ACCESS
- VIP CREDENTIALS FOR ALL CANYONS EVENTS
Let’s analyze this. The “airfare to and from Canyons” might indicate “locals need not apply.” But I’m guessing many Utahns will submit nonetheless, heck, I’m hearing that employees at other Utah resorts are already working on their videos. If they picked a local blogger like myself, I’d be happy to drive down to the airport and have the helicopter pick me up and drop me off.
For more info on how to apply, check out their new microsite, HowDoYouMountain.com
Anyway, I’ve started working on my video. It’s about how I am going to get to The Canyons if I win the contest. Tell me what you think:
Ski Utah Gold Pass
So, let’s say you just won the lottery and you had some money to spend. Forget about that, let’s just say you wanted to take advantage of Utah’s winter bounty, and afford yourself the convenience of skiing where you damn want when you damn want. Ski Utah is once again offering up the Gold Pass for a cool $3,400. Say you plan on skiing 100 days plus this year. Wouldn’t it be great to chase the best snow? Most people struggle with scraping together enough jack just to get a local’s pass at one resort. If you are going to ski a lot, this thing makes sense. Plus, it’s direct-to-lift at the following: PCMR (includes Fast Tracks access), The Canyons, Snowbird, Alta, Solitude, Snowbasin, and Sundance. At the others, you just show it at the window and they give you a ticket. Ski Utah usually sells out of these. They are also transferable, so companies looking to provide ski privileges to employees could buy a couple Gold Passes and let employees sign them out. Get the whole skinny on this fat pass. And if $3,400 is out of your range, there is always the $2,300 Silver Pass, which gets you up to 30 days at all 13 Utah resorts. That’s what I’ll be rolling this season. Only bummer is this one is not transferable.
Locals Have More Fun

Locals have more fun.
I met a new fellow Skid at Deer Valley on Friday. This is Steve West, or Freeskier41. I think he has some crazy amount of days at The Canyons this year, like almost 100. That’s full-on Skids, as I am struggling just to get 50 this year. Follow him on Twitter @FreeSkier41 and check out his wordpress blog www.freeskier41.wordpress.com. Steve was sporting this sweet Locals Have More Fun jacket, and I had to introduce him to the Skids community.
Slackcountry Skids
It was a beautiful day for a backcountry, I mean, slackcountry ski tour. Slackcountry means a lot of different things, but in this case, we used the resort lifts at The Canyons to get to a suitable starting point for the tour. We rode up the 9990 lift, did a quick beacon test, then boot packed up and exited through the gate with the creepy skull and crossbones. A few people have gone through that gate, only to meet their doom. Our modus operandi today was to play it safe, even though the avalanche danger was forecasted as low. Our goal was a little bit of aerobic exercise, and hopefully finding a few rewarding turns in snow that didn’t suck. For two of us in the group, it was the first time testing out new climbing skins. It was comical at first, then we got the hang of the routine of pulling fresh and sticky skins apart, figuring out how to mount on our skis, and getting the hang of gliding rather than picking feet up too far and clomping down too hard. It didn’t take long. We all found a few good face shots before calling it good, skinning back up to the ridge and returning to the resort, calling it a day. When I made it down to the parking lot, there were some wannabe skids who were trying to panhandle lift tickets from people who were leaving for the day. I took the long way around to avoid them and scurried off. There are skids, and there are dirtbags. They’re not the same.
